The Center for Inquiry (CFI) continued to lobby the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Barack Obama Administration to not retreat any further on its regulation, released Jan. 20, 2012, to require health insurance providers and organizations providing health care plans to cover preventive health services, such as birth control, without charging a co-payment. Our lobbying included an action alert and two letters to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and President Barack Obama urging them to stand firm on the rules and reject lobbying efforts by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The Center for Inquiry also lobbied the Senate to reject the Blunt Amendment (S. 1813), which would have amended the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to allow employers and health insurance providers to exclude any coverage that they deem immoral or contrary to their religious beliefs. S. 1813 was defeated 51-48. CFI wrote several Senators on why the amendment was wrong, and pushed members at the grassroots level to contact their local Senators.
