Sequestration: UA advocates for a lifting of the BCA caps and an end to sequestration for FY16. UA also advocates for sufficient appropriations for federal research funding agencies, including NASA (major priority including Science Mission Directorate and Space Grant), NIH, NSF, DOE, DHS (University Programs), USDA/NIFA, DOD and DOI. This quarter UA followed up on letter signed by President Hart and 40 major business organizations from So. AZ against sequestration and in support of federal research appropriations.

Graduate Medical Education (in 113th, HR1201) - AZ faces a physician shortage and GME reform is necessary relief. Higher Education Act Reauthorization - UA supports several initiatives in this legislation which is expected in 2015/114th Congress, including support for Title VI centers, financial (Pell Grant), competency-based education programs (HR3136 in 113th).

UA called for sufficient funding support for federally-funded research through various appropriations bills, including for: FY17 Commerce Justice Science for NASA appropriations in support of Science Mission Directorate (SMD) and Space Grant (including discussions on the American Space Renaissance Act, and for NSF funding; DOD Appropriations against lower DOD Basic Science funding, in Labor HHS appropriations for higher NIH funding, and for the Water Resources Research Act.

UA takes its technology transfer initiatives very seriously and as a part of its economic development contribution to Arizona's economy. UA opposed HR9, the Innovation Act, due to unfavorable provisions such as on joinder. UA informed Senators of our support for the S. 1137, the PATENT Act.

UA called for robust funding for defense research 6.1 funding in both the markups for National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)and defense appropriations bills, (HR 4909 and S2943) including for DARPA and other agencies that provide defense research funding available to Universities.

The University of Arizona shared concerns over pending Department of Labor regulations modifying the income level under which employees are eligible for overtime pay due to their potential large financial impact on the University. House and Senate bill numbers pending. Estimated impact on the University is over $3M annually.
