The IBEW met with the staff of U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (OH) to urge support for a proposal by American Municipal Power (AMP) of Ohio to construct hydro-electric generators along the Ohio River at existing locks and dams that are currently used for navigation.

The IBEW supports the inclusion of nuclear energy in any green jobs program because electricity generated by nuclear power creates no green house gas emissions.

The IBEW continued to lobby Congress, and seek cosponsors, in support of the Taxpayers Responsibility, Accountability, and Consistency Act (H.R. 5804); legislation designed to significantly limit an employer's ability to deliberately misclassify workers as independent contractors. Unscrupulous employers who wrongfully misclassify employees deprive workers of legitimate protections under federal and state labor laws and cost those same governements billions of dollars in revenue each year.

The IBEW lobbied Congress to seek cosponsors in support of next year's expected re-introduction of the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA). EFCA incorporates three key reforms designed to restore the right of workers to organize free from intimidation or harassment. It provides for certification of a union as representative of employees whenever a majority of workers have signed authorization cards; it facilitates initial labor agreements by requiring the use of mediation and binding arbitration where the parties
cannot reach an agreement in 60 days; and establishes, for the first time, penalties against employers who violate workers right to organize.

The IBEW lobbied Congress in support of using funds from the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act to provide bridge loans for the ailing US domestic automobile industry. The industry has long been a mainstay of the economy and, despite the recent economic downturn, continues to be responsible for one in every ten American jobs. The bridge loans are necessary because a bankruptcy-related shutdown of the industry could cost the United States up to 3.3 million jobs.
