Urged DHS to re-designate TPS for El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras and Nepal. Also urged DHS to make the findings necessary to designate or re-designate TPS for all other countries that qualify under the statute, including Guatemala and Venezuela.
Urged Congress to safeguard and invest in critical funding for migration, peacebuilding, human rights, humanitarian aid, foreign climate aid, poverty-focused development assistance and related accounts in Appropriations. The letter was prompted by the dramatic cuts proposed in the House SFOPs subcommittee markup.
Asked President to end the asylum ban and redouble U.S.' focus on effective, humane, and legal solutions, including to: strengthen and provide equitable access to administrations parole initiatives; fully restore asylum processing capacity at ports of entry including for people who do not have CBP One appointments; end the practice of subjecting individuals to fear screenings while in CBP custody; work with Congress to adequately fund immigration court and USCIS asylum adjudications as well as reception efforts in U.S. communities; and improve U.S asylum processing rule by eliminating counterproductive unworkable deadlines.
Asked President and DHS to promptly designate Pakistan for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Special Student Relief (SSR). Our request came as recent terror threats took the lives of dozens of individuals. A designation was warranted in light of the unstable and insecure conditions in the country, including deteriorating infrastructure and growing security threats. These conditions were exacerbated due to the political instability and upcoming elections in the country. The call was to use the tools provided by Congress to protect human life by designation Pakistan for TPS and SSR.
Action alert urging lawmakers to consider the best ways to protect migrants vulnerable to the threat of human trafficking.
Call to President Biden and his administration to forcefully condemn Governor Abbotts cruel and inhumane treatment of migrants at the Texas-Mexico border, end any federal cooperation with the unlawful activities of the Texas Department of Public Safety, and use all available resources and authorities to take action against Operation Lone Star.
Sent an email blast to all House members urging them to sign on to a bipartisan Dear Colleagues letter asking the Biden Administration to re-designate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Nicaragua. The country has been facing worsening socio-political and humanitarian crises for years.

Urged Congress to vote NO on the package of Republican tax proposals-H.R. 3936, H.R. 3937, H.R. 3938-when they are brought to the House floor for a vote. Like the original Trump-GOP tax cuts in 2017, the Ways and Means-reported package (tax cuts 2.0 version) is overwhelmingly tilted toward the ultra-wealthy, billion-dollar corporations, and foreign investors while providing little help for low- and middle-income Americans and rolling back progress on addressing climate change.
Urged Congress to support the SSI SAVINGS PENALTY ELIMINATION ACT. The bill would raise the SSI asset limits (which have been stuck at $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple since 1989!) to $10,000 per individual/$20,000 per couple, and adjust the levels automatically with inflation each year. This proposal is critical for improving financial security for people with disabilities. It is a bi-partisan, bi- cameral! The Senate leads are Senators Brown and Cassidy, and the House leads are Representatives Higgins and Fitzpatrick.
Action alert urged Congress to reinstate an expanded and fully refundable Child Tax Credit.

Urged Congress to fulfil its most basic duty: to keep the government running. Congress must pass a clean bipartisan, bicameral continuing resolution (CR) including emergency funding that supports current services and addresses urgent needs and is free of poison pill policy riders that are harmful and irrelevant to the functions of government.
Letter of support of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and Science appropriation of $50 million toward the Community Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative (CVI). We further support the dedication of $20 million specifically to the violence interrupters in the committee's report language.
Appropriation letters to Congress opposing all harmful riders and especially the one that blocks IRS free simplified filing and also urges full funding for the IRS (including reversing the funding that was cut as part of the debt ceiling deal.)
Urged House appropriators to restore the massive cuts made and to remove harmful provisions in the State and Foreign Ops Appropriations bill. The letter to House appropriators was in response to the House SFOPS bill released/marked up. The House SFOPS bill not only significantly cut the SFOPS topline (~30% below FY23, before rescissions are taken into account) but also included several provisions prohibiting funding for climate priorities (no funding to GCF or CTF, no counting other funding as having contributed to climate objectives).
Urged Senate appropriators to protect the overall State and Foreign Ops Appropriations bill amount and specifically international climate finance. This letter made reference to the House bill. The letter was also in advance of the Senate SFOPS mark up expected to take place in mid-July.
Blast email to Congress, urging them to reject any further efforts to cut assistance from people with low incomes; in particular, prioritize human needs investments in annual appropriations bills; focus on tax fairness by increasing revenues for wealthy and corporations and again expanding the Child Tax Credit.
Request to Congress to strike section 559 of the Fiscal Year 2024 Commerce, Justice, Science (CJS) Appropriations bill on grounds of unconstitutionally. Section 559 seeks to exclude undocumented immigrants from the congressional apportionment calculation after each census. This in turn will jeopardize the accuracy of the 2030 Census.
Letter urging Congress to include sufficient resources in a short-term Continuing Resolution to ensure that WIC can continue providing all eligible women, infants, and children who seek to participate with the full, science-based nutrition benefit. The letter also calls on Congress to fully fund WIC for fiscal year 2024 to sustain current benefits and increasing participation.
Letter urging Congress to prioritize human needs in the annual FY24 appropriations bills and reject cuts to essential programs such as: the Special Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC); nutrition assistance for schools; early childhood programs; access to affordable housing; and, other programs that support thriving children, families, and communities. As Congress considers annual spending bills, letter also urges them to invest in critical infrastructure to welcome newcomers, to reject unrestricted funding for border security and enforcement, and to oppose restrictions to humanitarian protection. Letter points to the need for strong government funding to implement the Inflation Reduction Acts climate and public health programs to protect all people and our Sacred Earth.
Action alert urging Senate to provide an increased WIC funding level that ensures all 600,000 pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and toddlers in the richest country in the world get the crucial food aid they need.
Action alert to House urging them to swiftly pass a budget that protects the most vulnerable, opposing any cuts in human needs spending above those already agreed to in the debt ceiling deal.
Action alert urging Congress to immediately pass a clean Continuing Resolution (CR) - a resolution that would allow the government to continue operations; a CR that does not completely strip human needs programs for low- and middle-income people and families, and one that protects immigrants seeking asylum within our borders.

Raised up importance of the massive Farm Bill. The legislation, up for consideration every 5 years, has significant consequences for many aspects of American life, including anti-hunger programs, conservation and environmental stewardship, support for farmers and producers, and investment in rural communities.
Urged Congress to use the Farm Bill to strengthen and expand SNAP, and to make investments that advance family economic security and health.
Letter in support of the RESTORE Act. The bill would lift the lifetime ban on persons convicted of drug felony offenses from receiving aid from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). It would also enable states to enroll people 30 days prior to their release from prison to help ease the process of returning to their community. Finally, it would enable access to the SNAP Education and Training program to provide vocational help to returning citizens
Action alert urging Congress to aggressively address climate change in the 2023 Farm Bill.
Letter in support of the Enhance Access to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) Act. Bill would no longer condition college students with low incomes' eligibility on performing 20 hours of outside employment or work-study.

Letter to the US ambassador to Peru in advance of a big protest there and at the request of Maryknoll missioners in Peru. Letter called for respect for the human rights of protestors, given the tragic killing of some 50 of them, mostly indigenous, at protests in Jan and Feb. Similar letter was addressed to Pres. Biden and Congress asking for the suspension of U.S. security assistance to Peru until the violent repression against protesters ends and human rights violations are addressed.
Letter urged Congress to support the Senate provisions of the FY24 State, Foreign Operations Appropriations bill that provide aid to support the consolidation of peace, the improvement of human rights, and the well-being of those who have suffered the cruel impact of war in Columbia. The letter also urged the conferees not to retain section 7045 (e) that could potentially bar Title III assistance to many countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and other parts of the world.
Email blast to Congress urging participation in a webinar focused on Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), a vital resource established by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that can help stabilize the global economy and protect U.S. jobs. The Sept. 7 briefing addressed global economic risks and advocated for the Biden administration's support of a new SDR issuance.
Letter calling for the White House to make an ambitious pledge to the Green Climate Funds second replenishment. The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is the worlds largest multilateral fund dedicated to investing in developing countries to address the climate crisis. The GCF is also a lynchpin of the political bargain underpinning the Paris Agreement, and key developing country leaders have already underscored the stakes of a strong GCF replenishment. A US pledge is part of demonstrating global leadership, reinforcing our commitment to our partners, and preserving US standing in the world.
In an email blast to Congress, urged the offices of Catholic Democrats in the House and Senate to sign onto a letter led by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and Reps. Chuy Garcia, Pramila Jayapal, and others, urging President Biden to help protect U.S. jobs and bolster the economies of developing countries by supporting a new, cost-free issuance of Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) by the IMF.

Urged Senate to advance insulin legislation that will provide affordable and accessible insulin to everyone. Any proposed legislation needs to include those who do not have insurance in addition to those who are privately insured. It must lower the list price of insulin, and must stop anti-competitive abuses by drug corporations and middlemen that stifle potential savings from lower-priced insulins and put patients' lives at risk.
Email blast to Congress urging reauthorization of PEPFAR, the U.S. global health initiative dedicated to controlling HIV and AIDs; signed by 44 national and international faith-based organizations.
Letter in support of the Child Poverty Reduction Act. The bill would establish a national child poverty reduction target in the United States, setting an official goal to cut child poverty in half within a decade.
Urged Congress to pass the Care for Moms Act, a bill sponsored by Rep. Robin Kelly to address some of the core Black Maternal health challenges. Significantly, it would require states to expand Medicaid for one year of postpartum coverage. Current law makes it optional.
Urged HHS to support parity enforcement related to mental health prior authorization requests, provider networks, and provider reimbursements. We also encouraged the relevant agencies to take further steps to make mental health more affordable and accessible.
