Specific attention was focused on pear genome, genetics, breeding research programs conducted by the U. S. Department of Agriculture and their relevance to the pear industry in the Pacific Northwest

To insure that specialty crops interests, especially with respect to research, are considered by the House and Senate as the authorizing committees began hearings in preparation for efforts in the next Congress to reauthorize the general farm statute. Signficant emphasis was on the signficant benefits accruing to the specialty crops industry and to the nation from the operations of existing specialty crops research programs
