Oppose efforts in Congress to weaken the independent funding or single-director structure of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (including in FSGG Appropriations-HR3351 and related House or Senate bills and so-called mini-bus packages). Support Data Breach Prevention and Compensation Act (S1336/HR2545) to hold large credit reporting agencies (CRAs)-including Equifax-accountable for data breaches involving consumer data. Support (draft House) Consumer Credit Reporting Reform Act (Waters).
Urge Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to prevent fraud in Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) loans. Urge Consumer Financial Protection Bureau not to reverse/weaken the Payday Lending and Auto Title Loan Regulation. Urge CFPB not to weaken debt collection rights. Urge CFPB not to weaken the 2009 Overdraft Rule. Urge CFPB to fully supervise the Military Lending Act. Urge CFPB not to weaken the Public Consumer Complaint Database. Urge CFPB to use full enforcement authorities and to hold more wrongdoers accountable with larger civil penalties and more consumer restitution orders.
Support efforts by Federal Housing Finance Authority to broaden access to homeownership for creditworthy borrowers with limited English proficiency.
Oppose numerous not-yet-introduced draft proposals in Senate Commerce and House Energy and Commerce Committees to establish federal privacy or data breach/data security laws that preempt stronger state privacy laws, prevent consumers from enforcing private rights of action when harmed. Urge members of House and Senate to back federal privacy proposals that protect stronger state laws, establish a Data Protection Authority, grant consumer private rights of action against privacy harms and protect civil rights. Urge Federal Trade Commission to enforce the Facebook consent order and impose penalties as well as hold executives accountable. Urge the FTC to impose more penalties and restitution generally in its orders against wrongdoers.

Lobbying for a general hearing through Energy and Commerce of antibiotic resistance, generally working to influence policies to reduce antibiotic use on farms.

Opposed CFPB's re-proposed payday lending rule and new debt collection rule. Supported protecting the CFPB's independence, including making sure that its public database remains public. Supported keeping the CFPB's public database public. I also joined a coalition meeting with CFPB Director Kraninger and asked her to commit to keeping the public database public.
Held about 15 meetings with House staff in June in support of holding the credit bureaus accountable and protecting consumer data security and privacy. Supported improving accuracy of credit reports and providing consumers relief from negative information on their reports. Supported holding Equifax accountable for its massive data breach with penalties. Advocated in support of giving the FTC authority to fine the credit bureaus after a first violation of the law. Opposed preemption of state data security and privacy laws.
