Sent a letter, signed by 28 religious and human rights leaders of varying faiths, to members of Congress, communicating
concerns regarding the escalating threats to religious freedom in Russia, and respectfully requesting that they raise this issue
with the Russian Ambassador to the United States. The gravest threat to religious freedom in Russia is the federal governments escalating use of the 2002 Extremism Law to censor religious scriptures and disrupt religious organizations under the pretext of...
combating religious extremism. This has led to nationwide bans of widely-published religious literature, and comes against an established pattern of government obstruction of religious minority communities, using provisions of the 1997 Religion Law and the 2006 NGO Law.
Leading members of the International Religious Freedom Caucus decided to sign a letter to the Russian Ambassador, and when they circulated a "Dear Colleague" letter inviting other members of Congress to sign on, I urged other members of Congress to sign the letter with them.

Worked with other members of an informal working group to lobby for passage of the National Criminal Justice Commission Act
of 2009. This is a bill to "establish the National Criminal Justice Commission." H.R. 5143 passed the House by voice vote on July 27, 2010, on motion to suspend the rules and pass the bill. Then, worked with client to sign a "Clergy Sign-On" statement with dozens of religious leaders of varying faiths, in support of the Act in the Senate, which is S. 714. The statement, which strengthens and...
emboldens our collective call for criminal justice reform, was then sent to Senators. The statement read as follows:
"As religious leaders we call for a criminal justice system that promotes accountability and fairness for those accused, healing for those victimized, and restoration of the affected community. We need a system that has compassion for all. The current system in the United States is broken and we believe the National Criminal Justice Commission Act provides an opportunity, through careful study, to create a criminal justice system that maintains public safety, lessens the costs to taxpayers, and is truly just and fair."
Also worked with client to join with other religious leaders of varying faiths in endorsing the Foreign Prison Conditions Improvement Act, which was introduced on September 16, 2010 in both the House and Senate, as H.R. 6153 and S. 3798. This is a bill to authorize appropriations of United States assistance to help eliminate conditions in foreign prisons and other detention facilities that do not meet minimum humane standards of health, sanitation, and safety, and for other purposes.
