The USDA Office of the Secretary announced its intent to move the Economic Research Service (ERS), currently under USDAs Research, Education, and Economics mission area, under the Office of the Chief Economist (OCE) under the Office of the Secretary. It also indicated that most employees of ERS and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) will be relocated outside of the National Capital Region to be completed by the end of 2019. This action will put the public agricultural economic intramural research agency at great risk and alienate agricultural research from the rest of the science enterprise.
As a result, actions engaged USDA and the appropriate congressional committees who have oversight jurisdiction over the action. Relevant legislation includes:
