H.R. 3486 - "Short Sea Shipping Act of 2009" - To amend the Internal Revenue code of 1986, to exempt certain shipping from the Harbor maintenance tax. Section 2., Exemption of certain commercial and bulk cargo from the Harbor Maintenance Tax. Lobbied House Ways and Means Committee staff members regarding cosponsoring this legislation. Met with coalitions in support of this act and attended a conference.
S. 1390 - "National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010" - Title XIV (Subtitle A) & Division G. Lobbied members of the Senate Armed Services committee.
S.1194 - "Coast Guard Authorization Act for Fiscal Years 2010 and 2011" - Authorizes appropriations for
FY2010-FY2011 for the Coast Guard, Title 4, Shipping and Navigation, & Title 8: Oil Pollution Prevention. Met with members of the Senate Commerce Committee and their staff regarding support for this bill.
H.R. 2997 - "Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2010" - Makes appropriations for Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies programs for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2010, and for other purposes, Title 4, Foreign Assistance and Related Programs (PL 480 Program). Lobbied House Appropriations committee members and staff regarding this bill. Met with members of a maritime coalition to support the PL 480 Program.
S.1406 - "Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2010" - An original bill making appropriations for Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies programs for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2010, and for other purposes, Title 4, Foreign Assistance and Related Programs (PL 480 Program). Lobbied members of the Senate Appropriations committee and their staff. Viewed hearing in Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies. Met with members of a maritime coalition to support the PL 480 Program.
S. 1509 - "Great Lakes Short Sea Shipping Enhancement act of 2009" - To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to exempt from the harbor maintenance tax certain commercial cargo loaded or unloaded at United States ports in the Great Lakes Saint Lawrence Seaway System. Lobbied members of the Senate Committee on Finance and their staff to enlist cosponsorship of the bill.
S. 588 - "Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2009" - To amend the title 46, United States Code, to establish requirements to ensure the security and safety of passengers and crew on cruise vessels, with an amendment in the nature of a substitute. Section 4 (B) To act as environmental observers for the purpose of... would have possibly conflicted with a special program in Alaska in which some AMO members work under.
July 8, 2009: Viewed hearing on "National Maritime Center (NMC) and Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMC)" in the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Marine Transportation.
Piracy on the High Seas Issues: Since international pirates first attacked two U.S.-flag vessels last year, the maritime industry has called upon the U.S. government to help protect U.S.-flag vessels and their U.S. citizen crews from further attacks. Lobbied members of the House Armed Services, and House Transportation & Infrastructure committee members as well as Senate Commerce, Science, & Transportation committee members and staff, and Senate Armed Services committee members and their staff.
Met with and contacted the Maritime Administration (MARAD) and Department of Transportation (DOT) staff members on various issues concerning the membership of American Maritime Officers.P.L.-480 Program, Title XI (Shipbuilding Loan Guarantees), Ship disposal and the Maritime Security Program.
Met with and contacted the United States Coast Guard on various issues concerning the membership of American Maritime Officers, mariner licensing and medical documentation, and mariner and vessel protection.
There were non-active periods in July (July, 1st - 7th), August (Aug. 1st - 31st), and September (Sep. 1st - 7th,
18th & 28th) of 2009.
