16. Specific lobbying issues
Telecommunications & Technology:
National Broadband Plan -- expressed support for elements of plan to help increase broadband adoption rates and access.
"Open Internet" NPRM -- expressed opposition to "net neutrality" regulations in comments filed with the Federal (cont.)
Telecommunications & Technology (continued)
Communications Commission (FCC). Concerned about the implications for investment and jobs, innovation and full deployment of broadband (access for small businesses) if new internet regulations are adopted.
Health Care Reform
Advocated for specific reform measures that would lower the cost of health coverage and improve competitiveness for small business owners including: expanded Health Savings Accounts (HSAs); tax-parity for the self-employed; legal reform; cross-border purchasing of health plans; pooling for small firms, tax credits for small businesses.
Opposed legislation that would raise health insurance costs and taxes on small businesses, and impose new mandates and burdensome regulations including:
HR 3590 -- "Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act" (the Reid bill): Advocated against as the bill will push health insurance premium costs higher, raise taxes on individuals and small business owners, imposes a new mandate to buy health insurance on the struggling self-employed, new employer mandate on mid-size firms, and new compliance burdens (reporting requirements) that will hit small businesses hard.
HR 4872 -- Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act: Opposed the measure as it will do all of the above and harm our nation's job creators.
Federal Procurement Policy
"High Road Initiative" -- Expressed opposition to new government contracting policies being considered that would discriminate against small, women-owned and minority-owned firms.
Project Labor Agreements -- Expressed opposition to this policy that would hurt the competitiveness of smaller, non-unionized firms and raise taxpayer costs in the government procurement arena. Opposed political favoritism in the awarding of government contracts in general.
Regulation
EPA's Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Rules: Opposed as they would raise energy costs for small businesses and consumers, while imposing a costly, byzantine regulatory process on many small entities.
S.J. Resolution 26: Support the bipartisan resolution to disapprove EPA's proposal to regulate GHG emissions under the Clean Air Act.
Financial Regulatory "Reform" and credit card regulation: advocated against changes that would only serve to reduce availability of capital and credit (and make them more expensive).
Taxes
Continue to support the permanency of tax relief provided under President Bush including personal income tax rates, capital gains, dividends, and section 179 expensing
Continue to support full death tax repeal, elimination of the alternative minimum tax (AMT), R&D tax credit permanency and further reductions in tax rates.
Continue to advocate for fundamental tax reform along the lines of a flat tax.
Advocated AGAINST the imposition of a value added tax (VAT).
