Protection of home education from government regulation - meetings with Members of Congress and their staff to talk about general homeschooling success and to ask Congress to "leave us alone."
HSLDA strongly opposes more federal involvement in early education, and continues to meet with Members of Congress and their staff to oppose any expansion in this area in upcoming legislation generally.

All these treaties threaten parental rights, homeschool freedom, and US sovereignty.
Meetings with Members of House and Senate and their staff to urge them to support the Parental Rights Amendment. It has been reintroduced in the Senate as S.J.Res. 36. We are working with House sponsors to reintroduce in the House.

Support of provisions in S. 306, the Enhancing Education Opportunities for All Students Act, which will allow homeschool families to use the Coverdell Education Savings Account for homeschool k-12 expenses. Currently, federal law only allows families to use the Coverdell Education Savings Accounts for "public and private school expenses," and S. 306 would allow families to use Coverdell Education Savings Accounts for homeschool expenses, as well as public and private school expenses.
Opposition to any federal funds going to homeschoolers, including "Title I portability." Meetings with staffers to oppose provisions in HR 5517 that could potentially allow homeschool students to receive Title I federal funds. HSLDA opposes this because it could lead to federal regulation over homeschool families.

Meetings with House and Senate Members and staff to oppose a provision in HR 3894, "To amend title 10, United States Code, to require the prompt notification of State Child Protective Services by military and civilian personnel of the Department of Defense required by law to report suspected instances of child abuse and neglect," ("Talia's Law") which would require double reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect by DOD personnel to both DOD authorities and civilian authorities. We believe that this will lead to double investigations of abuse and neglect, weakening state CPS agencies. We also lobbied against this provision that was included in Section 541 in the House FY 2017 NDAA, HR 4909. We have met with Senators and their staff to urge that this section not be included in the Senate FY 2017 NDAA.
Now that this section was included in the NDAA in both the House and Senate versions, we are working to make sure that our Report language specifying that this should not be used to conduct double investigations on families remains in the final bill.
HSLDA is also opposing the provisions in the Senate's version of the NDAA that require women to register with Selective Service. HSLDA believes that this expansion of Selective Service could lead to an expansion of the draft.
