MPP believes marijuana should be taxed and regulated in a manner similar to alcohol. We lobbied members of Congress to support legislation and congressional action to further that goal. Legislation we support includes but is not limited to HR 499, the Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act, and HR 1523, the Respect State Marijuana Laws Act.

Because marijuana is illegal under federal law, banks are reluctant to provide depository services to marijuana businesses. MPP lobbied to address this public safety concern. We lobbied on behalf of HR 2652, the Small Business Access to Banking Act, and lobbied the Departments of Justice and Treasury directly.

MPP believes policies like pre-employment and public benefit eligibility drug testing that discriminate against marijuana users steer those individuals toward more dangerous drugs, like alcohol. Consequently, we lobby members of Congress to oppose such policies.

MPP lobbied to pass legislation decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana in the District of Columbia. We also lobby members of Congress not to obstruct such legislation from taking effect since Congress effectively has veto power over the DC Council.

MPP believes marijuana prohibition has failed and the individuals who use marijuana should not be subject to arrest or prosecution. We lobbied members of congress on legislation to further this goal, such as HR 499, the Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act, and HR 1523, the Respect State Marijuana Laws Act.

Because marijuana is a "Schedule I" Controlled Substance, section 280E of the Internal Revenue Service Code prevents legitimate, legal marijuana businesses from deducting ordinary business expenses. MPP lobbied to address this inefficient and job-killing policy, including through support of HR 2240, the Small Business Tax Equity Act.
