Sequestration: University of Arizona joined our fellow Institutions of Higher Education in asking Congress to stop the sequester planned for FY13 and which went into effect on March 26th, and to prevent sequestration from extending into FY14 and beyond. The impact of sequestration on the University of Arizona for FY13 is expected to be a minimum of $15M.

Graduate Medical Education (HR 1201 Training Tomorrows Doctors Today Act - Shock/Schwartz): AZ faces a physician shortage that is most acute in the primary care field. In 2010, the State ranked 41 in active primary care physicians per capita and 35 in primary care residents. Arizona is already funding more 150 residency slots with no Federal support (nearly all UA), but is still approximately 850 positions short of the national per capita average. UA supports legislation such as HR 1201

Federal Research Funding: UA advocated for sufficient appropriations for key federal funding agencies, such as the National Institutes for Health, the National Science Foundation, NASA, Department of Energy (Office of Science), DHS (University Programs), USDA (NIFA), Department of Commerce (NOAA), and Department of Interior (USGS). Generally, UA advocated for a minimum of FY12 funding levels for these agencies.

Federal Financial Aid issues: Pell Grants provide students from low-income families in Southern Arizona the opportunity to attend a top-ranked university. Over 9,000 undergraduate students currently enrolled at the University of Arizona have received Pell Grant assistance. 108,593 students at public institutions in Arizona received Pell Grants in the 2009-2010 award year.
Also, the Smarter Solutions for Students Act, H.R. 1911and related legislation, which UA opposed preferring a year freeze in loan rat

Higher Education Act Reauthorization: legislation to reauthorize is expected in the 113th Congress, and UA has joined our fellow IHE's in identifying issues of possible concern, including Title IV provisions related to federal financial aid and the Title VI foreign language centers; and access to financial aid, possible redress of the GI Bill not counting as federal aid under Title IV, along with a recalculation of the 90/10 rule.

America COMPETES Reauthorization: (America Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology, Education and Science Act of 2007). Current authorization expires this year, congressional action expected prior, with a focus on focusing support for the National Science Foundation and other agencies. UA has signifcant engagement with NSF, including on the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), iPLANT and other major initiatives.
