AATA advocated to support S. 420, The Foster Care Mentoring Act of 2011, to encourage obtainment & development of mentors for youth in foster care: 1) Authorizes $15 million for statewide, foster care mentoring programs; $600,000 max/per state; 2) Provides $4 million for HHS national public awareness campaign & mentor recruitment; 3) Allows up to $10,000 federal student loan forgiveness for a volunteer mentor of a child in foster care, which would be accessible to assist Art Therapy program graduates.

AATA advocated by letter to the Senate Committee on Health, Education..to oppose H.R. 1217, To Repeal The Prevention And Public Health Fund. 46 organizations signed on to the letter, representing thousands of healthcare providers and public health interests, i.e., Clinical Social Workers, Group Psychotherapists, School Psychologists, Ambulatory Behavioral Healthcare providers, an Eating Disorders Coalition, Community Behavioral Health & Developmental Disability programs, & Creative Aging groups.

AATA advocated to support and revise S. 604, the Seniors Mental Health Access Improvement Act of 2011 recommending additional language to include, equitably and on par with Marriage & Family Therapists & mental health counselors, the Art Therapists licensed asArt Therapists or Creative Arts Therapists (licenses now available in only 5 states) to further widen seniors' access to Medicare-covered, independently practicing mental health providers. AATA also opposed budget cuts to Medicaid.

AATA advocated to support the Childrens Hospital Education Equity Act of 2011, to allow childrens psychiatric teaching hospitals to participate in the Childrens Hospitals Graduate Medical Education Payment Program (CHGME). AATA supports the maintenance and growth of physician residency programs U.S. pediatric psychiatric teaching hospitals through funding of Medicare GME and CHGME programs.
