H.R.6496: Iraqi Refugee and Internally Displaced Persons Humanitarian Assistance, Resettlement, and Security Act of 2008; Sec. 2 findings and Sec. 5 bilateral assistance to Jordan.
S.3177: A bill to develop a policy to address the critical needs of Iraqi refugees; establishment of White House Coordinator for Iraqi Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons.
H.R.7255: Immigration Oversight and Fairness Act; Section 3 and Section 4 related to conditions of immigration detention, release options, and alternatives to detention.
Lobbied for improvements in the implementation, interpretation, and adjudication process related to INA Section 212(a)(3)(B) terrorism grounds of inadmissibility.
Lobbied Senate to develop a set of recommendations to improve the quality of the asylum adjudication process and eliminate disparities in that process. Recommendations included strategies to support legislation such as S.3114: A bill to provide safeguards against faulty asylum procedures, to improve conditions of detention for detainees, and for other purposes. Also advocated for the expansion of Legal Orientation Programs.
Lobbied for advancement of asylum priorities, including: safeguarding asylum seekers from arbitrary and unnecessary detention; ensuring that bona fide refugees are not barred from protection by arbitrary one-year filing deadline; ensuring that refugees are not inappropriately barred from asylum because of overly broad definitions of "terrorism" or "terrorist" organizations; reforming the asylum adjudication process; and ensuring that federal agencies carry out their international obligations regarding the protection of refugees.
