Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for FY11 (no number yet) - Multiple clauses; Provides funding for the Division of Diabetes Translation (DDT) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as funding for research at the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Our efforts are focused on increased funding for both of these agencies, on behalf of those who will benefit from the research and education/information programs that they provide. We have also been working to generate support for report language recommending research based on provisions of the Eliminating Disparities in Diabetes Prevention Access and Care Act. Issues worked on the Hill not yet reflected in legislation:
The Child Nutrition Reauthorization: ADA is interested in certain provisions that may be included in the Child Nutrition Reauthorization that will be drafted this year. Provisions affecting school meals, foods sold outside of school meals and local wellness policies will all be included in this omnibus legislation and are of interest to ADA. As listed above, legislation has been drafted in the Senate (and marked up by the Agriculture Committee), but not formally introduced. Legislation still has yet to be drafted in the House. S. 634/HR1585, The Fitness Integrated with Teaching Kids Act of 2009 Support entire bill; Amends the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to improve standards for physical education. (Lobbyists used: Meghan Riley)
HR 1324/S. 934, the Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act of 2009. Support entire bill; To amend the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 to improve the nutrition and health of school children by updating the definition of `food of minimal nutritional value' to conform to current nutrition science and to protect the Federal investment in the national school lunch and breakfast programs. Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act.Support entire bill and continue to work for inclusion of ADA-endorsed recommendations for child nutrition. This bill is the Senate version of the 2010 Child Nutrition Reauthorization. ADA particulary supports provisions recommended by the National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity. S.2734/H.R. 4124, The Diabetes Prevention Act Support entire bill; Diabetes Prevention Program; ADA is pursuing legislation to expand the DPPI, a community-based diabetes prevention program that stemmed from the successful NIH Clinical Trial. ADA also supported inclusion of this program in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Following passage, ADA is interested in allocation of $80 million for implementation of this program.
