Language in FY 2016 appropriations legislation that would improve access to counsel, immigration courts, Legal Orientation Programs (LOPs), and related issues.
H.R.1153: To modify the treatment of unaccompanied alien children who are in Federal custody by reason of their immigration status, and for other purposes (Asylum Reform and Border Protection Act of 2015).
Opposed bill and sought to enhance protections for asylum seekers and expand use of cost-effective and humane alternatives to detention for border cases.
Reforming the U.S. immigration detention system, including efforts to discontinue use of jails and jail-like facilities, improve custody/release procedures, expand alternatives to detention, increase access to counsel, and eliminate the detention bed mandate.
Reforming the current asylum system related to detention, the one year filing deadline, credible fear process, expedited removal process, terrorism-related grounds of inadmissibility, and general protections for asylum seekers.

H.R.1735: To authorize appropriations for fiscal year 2015 for military activities of the Department of Defense and for military construction, to prescribe military personnel strengths for such fiscal year, and for other purposes (National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2016).
Lobbied on sections concerning individuals detained at the United States Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay.
S.165: A bill to extend and enhance prohibitions and limitations with respect to the transfer or release of individuals detained at United States Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and for other purposes (Detaining Terrorists to Protect America Act of 2015).
H.R.401: To extend and enhance prohibitions and limitations with respect to the transfer or release of individuals detained at United States Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and for other purposes (Detaining Terrorists to Protect America Act of 2015).
Joint Resolution (as proposed by President Obama): To authorize the limited use of the United States Armed Forces against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
Lobbied to support 3-year ISIL AUMF sunset and 2002 Iraq AUMF repeal.
Lobbied for narrower definition of associated persons or forces, clear mission objectives, more stringent reporting requirements, geographical limitations, a compliance requirement with international law, and clarification that it supersedes any existing authority to use force against ISIL, and to add sunset provision to 2001 AUMF.
