Provide recommendations on the position of U.S. automakers on trade and related market access issues to the Administration and agency officials for a proposed modernization of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Advocate for the inclusion of currency disciplines and for the recognition of safety and automotive standards within a proposed modernization of NAFTA and future U.S. free trade agreements. Advocate to maintain the existing automotive rule of origin within the NAFTA. Provide recommendations on the position of U.S. automakers on trade and related market access issues to the Administration and agency officials for a proposed updating of the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement. Monitor the Korea -U.S. FTA implementation and advocate for the elimination of Korea automotive market access issues.
Continue to monitor any developments on the Omnibus Report on Significant Trade Deficits; Negotiating Objectives Regarding Modernization of the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico; and both the United States Investigations Under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 to Determine the Effects on U.S. National Security of Imports of Steel and Aluminum.
Advocate on automotive standards, automotive regulatory issues, and the continued acceptance of U.S. certified vehicles to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Standards Organization (GSO) and Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA). Address concerns with fuel economy standards and other automotive issues to the Saudi Arabia Standards Organization (SASO). Work with the U.S. regulators on the development of an automotive standards workshop for GCC standards regulators.
Advocate for the acceptance of U.S. certified vehicles and automotive regulatory issues in Ecuador, Egypt, Morocco, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Advocate for the development of an initiative by U.S. regulators to advocate globally for acceptance of U.S. certified vehicles. Advocate the position of U.S. automakers on new energy vehicle rules in China.
Work with the U.S. regulators on the development of an electric vehicles workshop at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Automotive Dialogue (APEC AD) and an automotive standards workshop for Vietnamese standards regulators. Reviewed and analyzed automotive related taxes in the APEC region in an effort to compare and contrast the burdens it places on consumers, industry and the impact on governments.
Continue to monitor developments on the WTO Environmental Goods Agreement and the Information Technology Agreement.
Develop an economic contribution report of the contributions of the U.S. automakers to the growth of the U.S. economy.
