Communicated with the Environmental Protection Agency about the process for participating in a Pilot of EPAs proposed Draft Guidelines for Product Environmental Performance Standards and Ecolabels for Voluntary Use in Federal Procurement. BIFMA is interested in having the ANSI/BIFMA e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard and the level Certification Program assessed through the pilot program.
Invited EPA staff to BIFMA's Chemicals Summit in Chicago in April and a Region 5 representative participated. The goal of the summit was to share the thinking of leaders in the environmental, health, and sustainability fields and better understand how alignment of the ANSI/BIFMA e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard and level Certification Program with the current practices of identification, assessment and reporting of chemicals could be achieved.

Urged Congress to reform Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) requirements that the World Trade Organization has found to be a violation of fair trade laws and address the threat of retaliation by Canada and Mexico. BIFMA supported H.R. 2393 to repeal the offending COOL requirements for beef, pork and chicken and urged the Senate to take similar action.

Collaborated with EPA, DOE, GSA, DoD, and USDA representatives as part of the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council. The SPLC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to support and recognize purchasing leadership that accelerates the transition to a prosperous and sustainable future. I serve on the SPLC's Technical Advisory Committee and work with members of the organization to fulfill that mission.
Counseled GSA staff on how the ANSI/BIFMA e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard would apply to specifications in the Federal Strategic Sourcing Initiative.

Arranged conference calls with OSHA about the applicability of the the article exemption and when exposure must be determined or risk assessments performed for furniture products to determine if, under normal use conditions, there is exposure to a hazardous material.
